"Kalathappam" is a North malabar region rice cake or delicacy, made of ground rice, fresh coconut , jaggery, fried shallots.. etc..this delicious dish is a perfect tea time snack..do try this recipe,here cooking time is not included preparation time..

Ingredients and spices that need to be Get to make Kalathappam:

  1. 1 cup raw rice
  2. 1/2 cup fresh coconut
  3. 1 cup jaggery
  4. 1 tsp cardamom powder
  5. 3 tbsp cooked rice
  6. Pinch salt
  7. 1/8 tsp baking soda
  8. 1/4 cup chopped shallots
  9. 1/4 cup fresh coconut flakes
  10. 3 tbsp coconut oil

Instructions to make to make Kalathappam

  1. Firstly rinse and wash rice and soak it for 3-4 hours, drain the water shift rice in to a blender add in fresh coconut, pinch of salt, cardamom, baking soda,& cooked rice.. add little water and grind it to a smooth batter(consistency is slightly thinner than dosa batter)
  2. Add little water to jaggery and place it on a, medium flame,let it melt, strain it and keep a side to cool...now add ground batter to jaggery syrup combine well...
  3. You can cook this in a cooker or any deep sauce pan...I have used sauce pan here, place a deep sauce pan on medium flame add coconut oil heat up add chopped shallots & fresh coconut flakes, saute it until they turn in to light brown golden colour.. now pour the batter, cover the lid...let it cook on low flame...it will get done in 12-15 minutes,(depends on the quantity you are cooking) check it out inserting knife or fork if it comes out clean it's done,
  4. Let it cool down a bit, place a serving plate on the pan and flip it...cut in to pieces and enjoy your delicious kalathappam with hot cup of tea...
